The Garden Lodge Company - Conran Design

Our standard structures fill the gap nicely between our premium lodges and the type of mass-produced timber buildings that are currently described by other manufacturers as suitable for year-round use. Typically these structures have a single thickness timber wall that does not allow the installation of insulating materials and a single thickness felt roof that does not allow sufficient moisture caused by human activity to escape from the inside.

By comparison our structures utilise our double wall construction method allowing the insertion of 100mm of insulation in the walls and a standard permeable ceiling with roof ventilation above allowing us to install a full 150mm of insulation. With the weather kept out and interior moisture levels managed through design our structures will remain dry and damp free indefinitely.

The difference between the two types of building is obvious from the moment you walk in. Our competitors' buildings feel like glorified sheds whereas ours feel like properly designed, insulated timber structures - just like a house in fact.

The design of this structure can be tweaked here and there depending upon what use you wish to put it to. Some may want the covered veranda as shown but others may prefer the walls to be pushed outwards to make more space inside. A deck can be added if required to fill the gap left by the removal of the veranda.

This structure is not designed for heavy roofing materials to be used so the choice is limited to sheet metal or cedar shingles. We never use felt as an option because it is so easily damaged and simply does not have the longevity of our two options. Sheet metal is by far the cheaper option as the cost and labour required to fit shingles would add significantly to the price.

The exterior would typically be a rough sawn timber but other options are available by request. Internally the building would be finished in a painted board or timber linings. Lighting, heating and electrical sockets would be available as options because we understand that there are people who would like this type of structure solely as a summerhouse, although it is easily capable of year-round use.

Double-glazing is standard although for those who will only use the structure as a summer use building we do offer the installation of single-glazing at a reduced cost.

Drainage of water from the roof can either be by traditional gutters and downpipes or we can use gutters with lengths of chain running from the outlets to small soakaways in the ground. The water will then run down the chains to the soakaways – a system commonly used in the Far East to great effect where rainfall can far exceed that of the British Isles.

The structure is comparatively light-weight and, as such, can be mounted on well laid slabs negating the need for a full concrete slab to be installed. This has the added advantage of not requiring heavy machinery to be brought on site.

As with all of our products this building is designed and manufactured here in Scotland and not imported from abroad. Typically this type of building will be erected on site in about two weeks. This is a good reflection of just how much our product differs from the competition with buildings that can be put up in about a day.

Prices for this type of building start at £8,500 + vat but we can build them to a larger size/different design to that shown if requested.
